What would I buy if I won a shopping spree from World Market’s HGTV Passport to Style Sweepstakes, to make over any room in my home?
Here’s what I’d pick from World Market, for our blahhhh Master Bedroom (Click each link for a better look):
BETTER WINDOW COVERINGS. #1 (Amber Diva Ikat Curtain): We need something on the darker side to shield our bedroom from the morning sun. I love the neutral brown and gray ikat print, which, as you will see, ties in with the brown and gray of the rest of the furnishings.
HIS AND HERS NIGHTSTANDS. #2 (Kiran Faux Inlay Cabinet) and #10 (Small Sasha Hall Chest): I’ve always thought that a husband and wife are one, yet their differences compliment each other. I love how these two nightstands go together, but have their own look as well (one structured, one curvy).
STYLISH BEDSIDE LIGHTING. #3 (Martina Aged Mirror Table Lamp) and #11 (Bologna Table Lamp): I chose these lamps to balance out the differences in color and masculinity/femininity of the nightstands. They both have a bulbous shape, but are made of different materials. The lamps also introduce a little bit of metal into the room.
TOP-OF-THE-NIGHTSTAND STORAGE. #4 (Square Wood Sushi Serving Tray) and #12 (Magenta Paige Mini Boxes): We both have our smart phones, glasses, books and other little trinkets and lotions that we like to keep on top of our nightstand. Okay, the little trinkets and lotions are more for me. I ventured into the kitchen section for a wood sushi tray to keep my husband’s things in place. For a pop of color, there are lots of beautiful woven baskets available at World Market…I like this pink set of three for my side.
ARTWORK. #5 (Ribbed Bone Frames): I’d make a collage out of these round sunburst-like frames, and put a piece of fabric or paper in some, and a photograph in others. It would make a lovely focal piece above the bed.
COLORFUL SHAMS AND THROW PILLOWS. #6 (Gina Pillow Shams, Amber Gold Velvet Throw Pillow, and Warm Ikat Throw Pillow): These shams and pillows called out my name. The shams (the blue patterned ones) are a nice backdrop while the velvet gold and pink/gold throw pillows add some fun and luxury.
AN ACTUAL BED. #7 (Oatmeal Draper Upholstered Bed): I’ve always wanted an upholstered bed. Why? Because anything with sharp corners always leaps out and bites me in the leg. And there’s something cozy about an upholstered bed as well. And I’m tired of leaning against the wall when I read in bed. I want an actual bed!!!
EXTRAVAGANT THROW. #8 (Chocolate Faux Fur Throw): In the excessive 80s, my mom was trying on mink coats. I was grossed out, until I saw this cropped reversible leather and mink jacket…and it fit me perfectly. I remember how luxurious it felt, and so not gross (my mom’s was still gross though, who knows why!). I was only 14, however; thank goodness even I had enough sense in my self-absorbed teenage mind to know the jacket was not coming home with me. This throw (faux, of course!) reminds me of that jacket that got away.
A NEW DUVET. #9 (Slate Gray Khara Quilt): There’s nothing like flopping onto my bed at the end of a long day. Quilting makes it feel even better, especially in the upcoming colder months. And the subtle print and serene color of this particular one would be a welcome sight as well.
MUCH NEEDED STORAGE. #13 (Six Drawer Dark Mahogany Chase Dresser): I would get two of these, one for each of us. These have a modern silhouette that I love. We need tall and narrow dressers, because our room isn’t that wide.
AN ARTFUL, HANDMADE-LOOKING MIRROR. #14 (Recycled Magazine Mirror): I love that this mirror brings in some DIY sensibilities. It also has some shiny threads woven into it, to add a special shiny touch.
So why would I like all of this stuff? Behold…
Exhibit B: No real bed. Again…we’re not in college, people. And…no color. None at all. The duck and pigs my girls left on the bed don’t count.
Exhibit C: I love this table. But it doesn’t quite fit here. Also, I have no lamp on my side, and no storage either.
Exhibit D: Notice that white blob on the floor, that’s our scrolly shade we brought over from our previous home. It’s so temperamental…if I don’t pull it at the exact angle it likes, it will just fall right off! And when it IS up on the window, it’s not even the right size.
I do want to keep what we’re using for our TV stand and storage…this changing table my dad made for the girls. The two tall dressers I chose from World Market would flank the TV stand. But the plastic bins and drawers? Got.to.go. Oh how I’d love to win a shopping spree at World Market to create a beautiful master bedroom!
