A little over two years ago, we moved to our current home to simplify our lives. And it has been so very peaceful living here. Our back yard isn't really a yard...it's just a deck over some overgrown weeds, but we have come to really love it.
My favorite thing has to be these birch trees. I've even made a craft in honor of them! In the summer, it becomes so thick and lush with leaves that it provides the perfect shade for us. Birds often visit this tree and hang upside down to eat seeds from the little pine cones. I love sitting outside, or even by the window, to watch them and identify them in my bird book (Nerd Alert!).
This year, I have also started a little container garden. You may remember it started out as this in early May...
...and then late May...
...and here they are today. I sound like my mom describing my girls every time she sees them: "Have they grown taller already?"
Are those flower buds I see? They weren't there yesterday! I am so excited. And I hope I pinched off the right leaves, which a friend told me to do when the flowers show up.
I just stare at my tomato plants in awe. I can't believe they're growing! It fills me with such hope that even a black thumb of death like mine can be rehabilitated. What does that say about people? Can people change too, like my thumb which I thought was completely hopeless?
Now don't laugh at where I sit when I'm outside. Here it is. Just a folding chair and a table that we store next to the patio door. I spruce it up, just for myself, with my favorite pillow off the couch and this vintage doily. We have only four of these chairs, enough for just our little family when we dine alfresco or when we watch the girls blow bubbles.
I enjoy my breakfast here often when the girls are at school. Sometimes I blog and sometimes I email a friend, talk to my mom on the phone, or just listen to the singing birds. Even if it's only for five minutes, it revives me.
So is my little folding chair enough? Sure...it's definitely function over form here. With the trees, birds, and our (literally) budding garden, there are many, many blessings to enjoy, to think about, to soak in.
But that doesn't mean I don't stare in awe at other things, like this outdoor furniture set from Sears:
The Garden Oasis Prescott 5-Piece Set...Yeah I wouldn't mind that at all!
But in reality, I am eyeing this Suncast 22 Gallon Resin Wicker Storage Seat. I would love to hide my potting soil and supplies in here, instead of dragging everything from the garage. Plus it’s extra seating and it would be a great opportunity to sew a bench cushion.
