For me, special occasions always mean steak, and summer always means the grill is fired up. And summer always begins with my birthday, which is today! Last weekend, we were having a few friends over, plus my girls declared it “Mama’s Practice Birthday!” so it was the perfect time to try Cattleman’s Finest Beef, which is sold at Smart & Final.
We had originally wanted flank steak, but these rib eyes were such a great price and looked really good.
We also picked up some fruit for the grill and to make some strawberry lemonade.

The girls were in charge of décor, and found these luau themed pieces for the table.

When we got home, my husband started preparing the steaks.
He put the steaks plus all the ingredients into a plastic bag.
And squished it all together to coat. The recipe for the marinade and estimated cooking times are at the end of the post.
Then grilled it up, along with teriyaki chicken skewers, nectarines, plus hot dogs and veggies.
While he grilled, the girls and I made strawberry lemonade.
Such concentration as she set the table!
Time to eat. Yay!
Here’s a close-up of the star of the show.
The steaks turned out medium. I’m more of a medium rare person. But it’s my fault…my husband kept calling me outside to take a picture of the steaks on the grill, but I wasn’t able to get out there right away!
Finally on my plate. So pretty, and yummy. The steak was tender and so flavorful.
Later that night when our guests had left and our girls went to bed, my husband prepared a special bowl of ice cream on top of a leftover grilled nectarine. My practice birthday wish…I hope it counts! Unfortunately there was no leftover steak…I wouldn’t have minded a candle stuck in that!
Recipe for Garlic Lime Marinated Ribeye Steak
- 2 1-lb ribeye steaks (1-inch thickness)
- 2 cloves garlic
- Juice of 1/2 a lime
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- salt and pepper
- 1-2 tablespoon Italian seasoning (or whatever dry herbs you have)
Add all ingredients with 2 ribeye steaks into a zip-top plastic bag. Squish it all together and allow to marinate for a few hours. If you’re using a gas grill, turn your grill to high. For medium, grill 5 minutes on one side, 4 minutes on the other side. For medium rare, do 4 minutes on one side, 3 minutes on the other side. Allow to rest for 5-10 minutes.
Thanks to my family and friends for making Mama’s Practice Birthday so special!
